There's really something to be said about starting Sunday morning with a really good cup of coffee and knowing that your breakfast is going to be superb.
That's how my Sundays are when we head to Gem City Dinor in Erie, PA for breakfast. Truth be told, we're the "old" people there, like, we go at 8:00 am. Afterwards, we head to Wegman's (read: the greatest grocery store) for our grocery shopping.
I digress, back to the hidden Gem City Dinor. If you blink, you may miss it. It's in a small shopping plaza, across from Millcreek Coffee. Parking can be a bit "fun" depending on when you arrive, but, it's well worth the creative spots and a possible few minute wait.
To be truthful, I can't 100% say how long Gem City has been a Erie, PA favorite but it's been our go-to breakfast spot for the last year or so.
Their menu is small but full of delicious goodies. They also have breakfast specials, weekly. Today, they had some butterscotch oatmeal stuffed french toast and just thinking about it gave me all the feel goods. (Note: I didn't order it. I would never be able to eat all of it myself). Their specials typically include some sort of delicious and decadent french toast, eggs benedict, hash and an omelet. Pro Tip: try the cheeseburger omelet if you have the chance!
Now that we got through the warmed syrup and powdered sugar, I ended up getting my favorite breakfast: egg white breakfast sandwich with cheddar cheese and bacon. The sandwich at Gem City Dinor comes with a side of potatoes that they call smashbrowns.
You can choose regular egg or egg whites, a few different types of cheeses and breads and three different kinds of meat.
I opted for egg whites, bacon, cheddar cheese and Italian bread.
Details on something I ate:
Restaurant Name: Gem City Dinor
Location: 3545 W 12th St, Erie, PA 16505
Item(s) Ordered: Breakfast Sandwich, subbed egg whites (there is a slight up-charge for this) and coffee
Price: $7.99 // Breakfast Sandwich + $.99 // sub egg whites + $2.49 // coffee (+ taxes + tip)
Value: Great value! Even with the egg substitution the price was more than reasonable to also include your side.
Atmosphere: At first, it was very deceiving. Pulling into the lot, you would and the location in the plaza, the space for the dinor itself was going to be small. FALSE! The space is very spacious, has seating on either side of the breakfast bar that is located in the center, and has outdoor seating when the weather permits.
I've been there when the wait was 15-20 minutes and when you can walk right in and grab a table. Each experience has been outstanding. The staff has always been welcoming, the atmosphere is relaxing (they always have great cartoons on the TV; like Wallace & Gromit), and the food is made to order. You don't even mind if it takes an extra minute or two to get your food because you are too busy looking at the art that they have on the walls that you can buy from local artists.
If you pop in and try something at Gem City Dinor let me know!
Check back and find out if it was something I ate!
